A Second Office
November 2008
Welcome to A Second Office

Dear Shay,

We turn the clocks back one hour tonight.  You know what that means, don't you?  The holiday season is quickly coming upon us and we only have two more months until the close of 2008.  The City of Boulder has already begun putting up the white holiday lights on the Downtown Mall and pretty soon the ice skating rink will be open in time for Thanksgiving.

I don't know about you, but one of the stresses of the holiday season is sending out Thanksgiving and Holiday cards.  No, problem.  There's no need for you to stress about this one; A Second Office has you covered.  We can help by setting up a SendOutCards account and have ALL of your holiday cards ready (even with your own photo), now, to be automatically mailed on time for the holidays.  No stress or worries.

There is a lot to cover in the newsletter this month.  I have invited guests to submit articles that would be beneficial to expand our knowledge base.  If you have an article that you would like to submit to be included in a future newsletter, please email them to Michele.  This month's guest article is submitted by Jennifer Patchen of Mutual of Omaha.

And, if you do find something of interest that a friend or colleague might find useful, I encourage you to select this link and forward the newsletter to them.

Long Term Care Insurance for Small Businesses

It's undeniable: People are living longer than ever. Medical advances now allow many people to live into their 90s and beyond. So, isn't it reasonable to assume that if you live long enough, at some point you will need care? The question is, how will you pay for it?

Many retirees rely on Medicaid. But only people with low incomes and few assets qualify for Medicaid. After spending all those years building your business and saving for your retirement years, do you want to plan for poverty and watch it all disappear?

Qualified long-term care insurance may be the solution. In the same way you insure your car or your home, you can insure for the possibility that if you need care, your expenses will be paid. As an added bonus, if you are self-employed you may get a tax break just for paying your premiums.

For example, if you own an "S" corporation, partnership or limited liability company, you may be entitled to receive a deduction for the premiums you pay, up to certain "eligible premium" amounts specified by the government. These amounts vary by age and are adjusted yearly for inflation. If you own a "C" corporation and work for the company, your deduction may not even be limited to the eligible premiums.

What about your key employees? Surely those employees who are vital to the success of your business would value the peace of mind that long-term care insurance provides. Long-term care insurance may help you keep your best employees from leaving for other companies to which they might be attracted.

Better yet, the premiums you pay for your employees may get even more favorable tax treatment than the premiums you pay for yourself. Premium for employees can be deducted and aren't subject to the eligibility limitations noted above. Therefore, the business gets to deduct the premiums and the employees aren't taxed.

The bottom line: Securing long-term care insurance for yourself and your key employees may be just what you need to keep your top talent - and your peace of mind.
